Can you tell us about your journey from RISD to becoming a renowned hat designer in NYC?
I was born in Flushing, Queens, New York and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States. I attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Graphic Design. Upon graduating, I would eventually move back to New York City, where I immersed myself in the vibrant, creative art world.
My natural gravitation towards fashion and design, led me to explore hat-making, and collaborating with my uncle who was a veteran in the millinery industry. The pieces would end up becoming viral, winning over celebrity clients and accolades, and be exhibited internationally in museums throughout the world.
What inspires your hat designs? Are there specific artists, movements, or experiences that significantly influence your work?
I’m inspired by the architectural beauty of nature and the urban environment of New York City, sacred and fractal geometry, colour theory, trompe-l’œil, the punks and vanguards in art history, anthropology, and the cyclical zeniths of human progress. As a doer and maker, I’m a humanist, most interested in creating ambitious work that strikes a chord with the culture-at-large. For example, the “Endless Echo Hat” was inspired by Greek mythology, specifically Echo and Narcissus, as well as the echo chamber effect of the internet. Artists like Salvador Dalí and movements in surrealism also play a big role in shaping my creative vision.

Can you walk us through your creative process, from conceptualization to the final product?
The process begins with inspiration and conceptualization, often influenced by mythology or everyday experiences. I sketch out ideas and then move to 3D modelling to bring the concepts to life. From there, I experiment with different materials, substrates, and techniques to create prototypes. The final product is a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology (analog + digital), marrying form and function (ergonomics) with industrial modes of manufacturing.
How do you balance functionality with the artistic and avant-garde aspects of your designs?
Balancing functionality with artistic expression is crucial. My goal is to create pieces that are not only visually striking but also wearable. This involves careful material selection and innovative construction methods to ensure comfort and durability without compromising on the avant-garde aesthetic.

What did winning the 2012 Met Museum Costume Institute Accessory Design Award mean to you and your career?
Winning the 2012 Met Museum Costume Institute Accessory Design Award was a pivotal moment in my career. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest and most-visited museum in the United States. It provided significant validation and exposure, helping to establish my reputation in the fashion world and opening doors to further opportunities and collaborations.
How do you feel about the extensive media coverage your work has received, from The New Yorker to Vogue and beyond?
The extensive media coverage has been incredibly gratifying and humbling. It has allowed my work to reach a broader audience and has helped to build a global platform for my designs. Publications like The New Yorker and Vogue have played a key role in amplifying my brand and connecting with fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing artistic integrity with commercial viability. Overcoming this involved continuously innovating and adapting to market demands without losing sight of my creative vision. Additionally, making my designs more accessible while maintaining their unique appeal has been a significant focus.
How do you see your work evolving in the next few years?
In the next few years, I aim to make more licensing collaborations, and I also plan to branch out into other design areas, such as furniture and shoemaking (a full circle, ‘head-to-toe’ turning point for me) while continuing to push the boundaries of hat design. More to come… Stay Tuned!

If you could design a hat for anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love to design a hat for Salvador Dalí. His surrealist approach and fearless creativity align perfectly with my design philosophy. Creating a piece for him would be an exciting and fitting tribute to his influence on my work.
