Meet Dr. Inya Lawal, the Brainchild Behind Africa Creative Market

Recently, FashionEVO had a chat with Dr. Inya Lawal, the driving force behind a number of projects that seek to empower women and youth in Africa, including the Africa Creative Market (ACM), which just concluded its second edition. ACM is an agile creative market event that brings together major stakeholders in the African and international creative industry to explore and exchange innovative ideas for Africa’s creative economy. See the interview below.

  1. What inspired you to establish Africa Creative Market (ACM), and how has the journey been since its inception in 2022?

Establishing Africa Creative Market (ACM) was born out of my deep conviction that Africa’s creative potential needed a platform for holistic development. The journey since its inception in 2022 has been nothing short of transformative. Witnessing the untapped talent in Africa and recognizing the need for a unified space to nurture, showcase, and trade in creativity inspired me to create ACM. It’s been a thrilling journey of discovery, collaboration, and empowerment, thanks to all our stakeholders and partners, including the U.S. Consulate in Nigeria, Paramount Africa, etc.

  1. As the founder, what vision did you have for ACM, and how has that vision evolved so far?

My vision for ACM was to create a dynamic hub that celebrates Africa’s creative diversity and serves as a catalyst for economic growth within the sector. The vision has evolved into a vibrant reality where ACM acts as a nexus for creative minds, fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainable economic opportunities across the continent and beyond.

  1. Can you share some key milestones and achievements of ACM that you are particularly proud of?

One of the most significant milestones for ACM was successfully organizing and bringing together influential stakeholders to exchange ideas and explore innovative strategies for the creative economy. We’ve also facilitated training programs, created job opportunities, and provided access to trade finance, contributing to the professional growth of countless creatives.

  1. In your opinion, what role does the Africa Creative Market (ACM) play in shaping the landscape of Africa’s creative industry?

ACM acts as a catalyst for change, disrupting traditional norms by providing a platform for creatives to showcase their talents, learn from one another, and access opportunities that were once elusive. It’s about creating a narrative that positions Africa as a powerhouse of creativity, not just locally but on the global stage.

  1. How has ACM contributed to empowering and elevating creatives within Africa’s vibrant creative community?

ACM has been instrumental in providing creatives with the tools they need to thrive. Through training programs, access to trade finance, and exposure on an international level, we’ve empowered creatives to turn their passion into sustainable careers, contributing to the overall growth of Africa’s creative ecosystem.

  1. What challenges have you faced in fostering the growth of ACM, and how have you overcome them?

Challenges are inherent in any ambitious venture. One major challenge was overcoming stereotypes about the capabilities of African creatives. I addressed this by showcasing success stories and creating partnerships that highlight the rich tapestry of talent within the continent.

  1. As a leader in the creative industry, how do you see the future of African creativity evolving, and what role will ACM play in that evolution?

I envision a future where African creativity is not just recognized but leads the global conversation. ACM will continue to be a driving force in this evolution by fostering an environment of innovation, collaboration, and economic sustainability.

  1. Can you highlight some of the key themes or focus areas that ACM addresses to support emerging talents in the creative sector?

ACM focuses on capacity building, tech-enabled business models, and providing exposure to global trends. We emphasize inclusivity, ensuring that emerging talents have the support and resources they need to thrive in an ever-evolving creative landscape, including film/TV, arts, music, fashion, and other creative endeavors.

  1. How does ACM foster collaboration and networking among creatives, both regionally and globally?

ACM also serves as a networking platform, organizing events, workshops, and forums where creatives can connect, collaborate, and learn from each other. We also facilitate partnerships with international organizations, creating a bridge for African creatives to showcase their work on a global stage.

  1. What advice do you have for emerging talents seeking to make their mark in the African creative industry?

My advice is simple but profound: Be bold, be authentic, and never underestimate the power of collaboration. The creative industry is vast, and your unique voice has a place. Seek opportunities to learn, connect, and showcase your work. ACM is here to support you on this journey.

  1. How has ACM adapted to the evolving landscape of the creative industry, especially considering recent global challenges and changes?

Adaptability is key, especially in the face of global challenges. ACM has embraced technology to facilitate virtual events, online training, and remote collaboration. We’ve also intensified our efforts in advocating for policies that support the creative industry, recognizing its role in economic development and cultural preservation. Despite challenges, we see them as opportunities for innovation and growth.
