What inspired you to create the Aisha Abu Bakr brand, and how has your vision evolved over the years?

At about 16, when shopping I would go to great lengths to make sure my outfits and those of my friends complimented our body type and style. I would personally sit with tailors when my outfit was being made; I learnt this from my mother. My grandmother taught me some needlework and draping; these were incredible moments of bonding that led to my belief that I would one day own a fashion brand. I grew up around very fashionable academic and entrepreneurial women. My historian mother and mathematician grandmother always looked put together and distinct.

They had very active lifestyles; their work, their children, their homes, their farms and community engagements and not once did I see them looking dishevelled. They looked sophisticated in African and Western styles.

I decided to go to a fashion academy even before any opportunities were available. While working as a newspaper journalist for a lifestyle magazine pull-out, the opportunity to style and create opened up.

That was how my fashion career was launched. I knew the exact type of brand I wanted to build; expressive in an understated, elegant and comfortable manner just like the women in my life. For the presence of the AA woman, her value and power are evident even before she speaks. This sophistication was my dream.

Being featured in Vogue three times is a remarkable achievement. How has this recognition impacted your brand and your approach to fashion?

Being featured in Vogue has certainly given the brand exposure in the British fashion landscape. It expanded our client base and industry experts like stylists, pulling our pieces for different projects. Our pop-up shop on Oxford Street was also very successful.

How does your brand incorporate sustainability and ethical practices into your fashion line?

Most of our pieces are investment pieces, we create timeless and quality pieces that can be passed on to others thereby encouraging slow fashion. Our products are made from eco-friendly and ethically sourced materials, we also contribute to the fashion ecosystem with practices like mentoring, transferring dying skills to a younger group of artisans and paying appropriate wages to our artisans and our partner factories.

What are you most excited to showcase at this upcoming fashion event?

I am excited about people enjoying Nigerian craftsmanship; our resort collection is the perfect space to experience this.

How do you ensure a strong connection with your clientele, and what feedback have you received from advanced women who wear your designs?

Client feedback is the backbone of our brand, we strongly rely on it and incorporate the needs of our clients while staying true to the brand aesthetics which attracted them in the first instance. Most clients have expressed they would like a more frequent collection release.

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers who look up to your success and hope to make their mark in the industry?

Hone your craft, outsource your weaknesses and stay true to your brand’s vision; even as change is a constant, change for the better.

Aisha Abu Bakr’s journey is a masterful blend of passion, cultural legacy, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Her ability to push the boundaries of design while embedding sustainability into her brand speaks volumes about what can be achieved when vision meets purpose. As Aisha continues to redefine what it means to be a modern woman in fashion, her work not only sets a new standard but also inspires a generation of women to own their narrative with confidence and grace. The future of Aisha Abu Bakr’s brand promises innovation and empowerment, and at FashionEVO, we’re eager to bring you more stories from those who are crafting the future of fashion with such brilliance. Stay tuned for what comes next.
