Unlocking Textile Narratives: Shinique Smith and Marcellina Akpojotor’s ‘Social Fabrics’ in Rele Los Angeles.
Rele Los Angeles proudly presents “Social Fabrics: Magic & Memory”—a remarkable dual exhibition showcasing textile-based works by Shinique Smith and Marcellina Akpojotor. This significant exhibition coincides with Frieze Los Angeles and is part of Rele’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
Exhibition Dates: February 13 – March 22, 2025
Location: Rele Los Angeles, 711 N Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029
Within this exhibition, both artists use textiles as powerful mediums. Shinique Smith and Marcellina Akpojotor introduce us to a world where fabrics serve as archives of memory, carriers of cultural heritage, and catalysts for transformation. Akpojotor, based in Lagos, creatively disassembles and reconfigures Ankara fabric, intricately weaving personal and shared histories into her layered collages. Sourced from local tailors, these fabrics act as mnemonic tools, reflecting the resilience passed down through generations while honouring the contributions of women in preserving cultural traditions.
In Los Angeles, Smith brings together textiles, found objects, and expressive marks, exploring the themes of material memory and social ritual. Her extensive sculptures and vibrant collaged paintings transform collected remnants into assemblages that infuse everyday life with a sense of transcendence.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive sampling of IBest Wines, which will present a selection of their acclaimed red and white blends. These selections celebrate the diversity and craftsmanship of wines from South Africa’s renowned Stellenbosch region.
Experience this captivating journey into the world of textiles and explore how these materials narrate stories from the past, celebrate the present, and inspire visions of the future.
