Who Woke Sleeping Beauty at the MET GALA 2024?

What would you anticipate at the grandest fashion event if not jaw-dropping costumes and looks from celebrities and fashion icons?

Co-chaired by Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny, who all made it to the best-dressed list, this year’s exhibition “Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion” featured a dress code, “The Garden of Time,” intended to uncover lost historical clothing, igniting conversations about emotions and the connection between an outfit and its wearer. The intention was to honour this connection by showcasing these works’ transforming power and giving them new life via the use of modern technologies.

New faces were spotted this year, as well as regulars like the Kardashian Family, Lizzo, Gabrielle Union, and many others, who did not fail to show up in style at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The best-dressed attendees were those who had proven to interpret this year’s theme into their outfits and express detailing in their costumes.

Let’s go through some of the amazing looks for the big night;

Ayo Edebiri

Styled by Danielle Goldberg for the GALA night, Ayo Edebiri outfit captured the theme as she graced the carpet in her textured floral Loewe halter-neck gown. The gown features a black-less white bodice that transitions into a colourful flower garden towards the skirt made with hand-embroidered floral guipure lace covered in 3D applique flowers. This creates an illusion of blossoming.

Dan Levy

Dan Levy’s outfit style is quite similar to Ayo Edebiri’s concept of the Garden of Time. Levy, who was styled by Jonathan Anderson, a Loewe designer, showed up in a double-breasted black jacket and floral print trousers with a matching pattern from the middle of his jacket to his trousers. This also creates a blossoming illusion as he seals the look together with Shiny black loafers.

 

Adwoa Aboah

Guess who showed up confident and pregnant? British Model and Actress Adwoa Aboah arrived on the red carpet in style unveiling her outfit and her baby bump simultaneously. 

Adwoa, styled by H&M in a Scarlet design came in a red ruffled crop top that spans above her yoke length revealing her red rhinestones bra and baby bump. Paired with a Maxi-skirt with a bubble hem, this leaves her baby bump nested between the two piece dress, announcing her pregnancy.

Zendaya

As a first-time co-chair for the fundraising fashion event, Zendaya graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art in an emerald green and electric blue Maison Margiela corset gown as the first outfit of the night and closed up appearing in a magnificent black corseted gown, a 1996 piece from John Galliano’s Era.

The first outfit featured a long trumpet skirt covered in stripes and embellishments adorning the left side of her waist. She sealed her look with a net mesh and tulle-feathered fascinator. 

The second outfit for the night, which can be referred to as the unexpected outfit is a lace-up bodice with long puffy off-the-shoulder sleeves and an enormous skirt that can swallow the length of Met’s Staircase; paired with a fabulous floral fascinator, typically a bouquet.

Badbunny

After his Met Gala Debut in 2022, Badbunny did not disappoint to harmonise the “Garden of Time” costume for this year’s fundraising fashion night. 

Showing up in a custom Maison Margiela Artisanal Collection by John Galliano, Badbunny arrived holding a bouquet, made with the same material as his jacket. Dainty dotted vertical pinstripes were noticed on his outfit with a red stripe by the side running up the inside of his trouser. He matched it all up with a black hat, gloves and black sunglasses.

Cardi B

The American rapper who consistently shows up in astonishing outfits arrived at the Met Gala “Sleeping Beauties; Awakening fashion” in a voluminous flowing black tulle gown, her gown could pass as the largest gown for the 2024 Met Gala. Some claimed that her dress could swallow the entire Museum’s staircase. Her Jewellery aligned with her outfit style as she sealed it up with huge earrings, massive necklaces, and a dazzling bracelet.

Other celebrities who also marched the MET carpet stylishly include Lana del Ray, Anya Taylor Russell, Wisdom Kaye, Jennifer Lopez, Bar Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.
