ISEDA and the U.S Consulate Partner to Champion Nigerian Fashion Entrepreneurs on the Global Stage

ISEDA, in partnership with the U.S. Consulate and FashionEVO, hosted a landmark creative exchange event titled “Fashion with U.S. Exchange Alumni in Fashion” at Ouida Lagos.

The event brought together established designers, rising creative talents, and cultural stakeholders to explore fashion as a powerful vehicle for diplomacy, cultural identity, and global enterprise.

The evening marked a significant milestone within the context of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, celebrating the deep-rooted, shared creative language and enduring cultural ties between the United States and Nigeria.

The program commenced with welcome remarks from Ibrahim Aliyu, celebrated author, publisher, and ISEDA Program Partner. Shoneyin set an inspiring tone for the evening, framing the ISEDA Creatives Club as a modern-day creative homecoming. She drew a poignant parallel to the historic legacy of the Mbari Club, emphasizing the vital importance of contemporary African creatives “building in public” and collaborating openly.

Following Shoneyin, Amanda Roach Brown, Acting Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Mission Nigeria, delivered opening remarks highlighting the rich history and bright future of the U.S.–Nigeria creative exchange. Roach Brown underscored how fashion transcends mere apparel, serving as a dynamic platform for bilateral diplomacy, economic empowerment, and identity preservation.

Real Talk, Heritage, and Global Business

The core of the event featured an engaging panel discussion moderated by presenter and producer Esther Umelo, featuring two distinguished U.S. Exchange Alumni:

  • Dr. Yetty Ogunnubi — Fashion Entrepreneur, Brand Builder, and Ready-to-Wear Specialist.
  • Ebunoluwa Farinde-Yussuf — Fashion Creative, Stylist, and African Textile Expert.

The panelists shared intimate stories about “The First Stitch” the precise moments their passion for fashion transformed into a professional calling. They explicitly detailed how their participation in U.S. government exchange programs fundamentally reshaped their understanding of international commerce and elevated their vision for what Nigerian fashion can achieve globally.

Addressing the theme Rooted in Culture, Ready for the World, both speakers discussed the delicate balance of staying grounded in indigenous silhouettes and textiles like Ankara, Adire, and AsoOke while designing for a highly competitive global marketplace. They challenged the young creatives in attendance to view their heritage not as a limitation, but as their ultimate competitive edge.

The conversation shifted into practical enterprise management, with the alumni providing transparency on underestimated entrepreneurial skills; such as strategic pricing, structured production, and identifying target demographics. They concluded with actionable, “real talk” advice, urging rising designers to protect their unique creative voices against the fleeting trends of social media and outlining practical business steps to implement immediately.

The event transitioned from strategic discussion to live, visual storytelling during the Fashion Showcase Moments:

  • Mini Lookbook Presentation: Designer Moses Agosu walked the audience through five signature pieces, deconstructing the cultural references, material choices, and intricate construction techniques behind each design.
  • Live Styling Demo: Ebunoluwa Farinde-Yussuf anchored a live, hands-on demonstration. She styled, draped, and narrated the creative decisions of a complete look in real time, directly tying her techniques back to skills and insights honed during her U.S. exchange experience.

Following a vibrant, audience-driven Q&A session focused on fabric sourcing, mentorship, and breaking into export markets, the evening concluded with networking, fostering new connections between the next generation of Nigerian fashion icons and established industry leaders.
