ONALAJA presents Re:Birth at London Fashion Week, a powerful SS27 collection exploring destruction, resilience and renewal through couture craftsmanship, African heritage and the enduring symbolism of the phoenix.
Unveiled in London on 20 September 2026, Re:Birth is a collection shaped by transformation. Originally conceived in 2020, the concept began as an exploration of finding beauty after devastation, strength after loss and the courage to begin again. The original sketches remained untouched for years, until their meaning changed profoundly following a fire that destroyed more than a decade of ONALAJA’s work, including collections, archives, samples, fabrics, embellishments and irreplaceable pieces of the brand’s creative history.
Returning to the original sketches after the loss, founder and designer Kanyinsola Onalaja transformed what had once been a conceptual study of the phoenix into something deeply personal. Re:Birth became a reflection on what survives when everything else is taken away: creativity, craftsmanship, heritage, purpose and the will to begin again.

Re:Birth unfolds across three distinct movements: The Burn, The Ash and The Rebirth. Together, they create a visual and emotional journey from destruction towards renewal.
The colour palette follows this progression. Ember reds, burnt oranges and terracotta evoke the intensity of fire, before giving way to scorched blacks, smoky greys and the quiet stillness of ash. From this darkness, colour and light gradually return through molten gold, iridescent surfaces and vivid bursts of colour.
Throughout the collection, feather-like forms emerge through sculptural silhouettes and fluid movement. Hand embroidery creates intricate, scale-like surfaces, while crystals appear across the body like sparks and glowing embers. Beads are deliberately broken, displaced and reconstructed into elaborate surfaces, turning fragmentation into ornament. Reflective threads catch the light as the garments move, creating the impression that each piece is evolving with the wearer.
Across evening gowns, sculptural dresses, tailoring and statement pieces, ONALAJA pushes its signature hand embellishment further, placing craftsmanship at the centre of the collection.
Yoruba and Edo Bini influences are woven throughout Re:Birth, with traditional patterns reinterpreted through feathered motifs, embroidery, beadwork and intricate surface treatments. Heritage and mythology meet contemporary couture through texture, form and meticulous handwork, with each detail reflecting the skill of the artisans behind the garments.
At the heart of the collection is a simple but powerful idea: a single bead may appear insignificant, but thousands brought together can become extraordinary. For ONALAJA, this becomes a metaphor for rebuilding. Something broken can be gathered, reworked by hand and given another form. Fragmentation can become beauty.
The story of Re:Birth extends beyond the garments. ONALAJA was founded from Kanyinsola Onalaja’s desire to create for women who have too often been overlooked within luxury fashion. Growing up surrounded by African women whose elegance, strength and resilience shaped her understanding of beauty, Kanyinsola developed a design philosophy rooted in visibility, craftsmanship and empowerment.
Her own experiences of exclusion within the fashion industry reinforced her belief that creating new possibilities can be more powerful than waiting for permission. That philosophy remains central to ONALAJA and to Re:Birth.
Ultimately, the collection is not a story about what burned. It is a story about what survived.
